Most of us have read stories about where Linux came from. We all know about Linus Torvalds programming away somewhere in Finland. Some of us know about Richard Stallman, and the Free Software Foundation, and why that plays into it. And, some of us know about BSD Unix, and the legal wrangling that kept it out of the limelight as Linux matured.
But, where does it come from now? Who does the continuing development work? Who pays for it?
Well, it turns out that we can trace that, at least for the kernel, by looking at the patches (that's not a derogatory term, it's a description of the development process) submitted for one version.
