Metacognition: Rats Know When They Don't Know

ScienceDaily reports that recent research indicates that rats are capable of knowing when they don't know something. This is the first demonstration of this ability in non-primates.

Nerve Impulses Trasmitted by Sound Not Electricity

This really sets everything we've been taught on its ear. Danish scientists are claiming that nerve impulses are transmitted by sound rather than electricity.

Shortly after finding that article, I ran into this one: Tuning Out: Music Makes Colonoscopies Less Painful. I suppose it stands to reason.

And, when someone says "That loud music is really getting on my nerves!" it may be more literally true than we thought.

Painless Workaround for CNN Video in Linux

I've been bothered by the fact that it was difficult to view videos from the CNN website in Linux, so I did some searching for answers. I found a few references to Greasemonkey scripts, but all that I found required strange contortions, like right-clicking the video links and selecting "Save As". Of course, they all also required the installation of Greasemonkey.

Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu? Ubuntu-Flavored Linux A Big Hit at Castolon LLC

We've been playing with Linux and BSD distributions for several years now, searching for that perfect distribution. (I have a tough time calling them "distros", not just because it sounds bad, but because there's no "o" sound in distribution. It should be "distris", not "distros".)

We've also played with Mediawiki and some other wikis.

When I say "played with", I mean "installed, configured, tested, experimented on, and (usually) deleted". Work is fun here at Castolon.
